  1. Greetings! I hope many of you like me have thrown themselves into the F/A-18C Hornet! I've installed it over the weekend, so only familiar with the basics so far. I thought I would share a quick mission for practicing type I carrier landings. I've attached the mission file and a short video of a few repetitive runs in a row. Procedure: 800 ft 350 kts overhead break to downwind leg Gear and full flaps below 250 kts Downwind leg 600 ft 30 degree left hand bank at on speed angle of attack *magic happens* Catch the third wire at no more than -850 fpm descent Rules: No fish in the cockpit. Running out of fuel is fine as long as you land first No bypassing the flight deck before ending up in the hangar Landing Practice F-18.miz

  3. Warning Order: Prison Break

OPERATION BLACKBIRD "PRISON BREAK" Situation Overview Over the past few months the CIA has been working undercover in Lingor, attempting to uncover the conspiracy behind the recent terror attack that took place in South East Asia. The evidence that came from the attack directed back to some individual’s that operate out of Lingor with the protection of the Lingor military. Four days ago the two undercover agents working on the case were abducted from their safe house, one of the agents was killed and the other is being held at the Lingor prison under security. The Lingor army is not our ally and have in the past worked closely with terror organizations offering assistance in exchange for weapons and illegal narcotics. SEAL teams are preparing to insert into Lingor and recover the CIA operative from the prison. SIGN UP HERE

  8. DCS World Helicopter Sale

DCS World Helicopter Sale Eagle Dynamics have kicked off an offer on their helicopter modules. Here's what they say in their weekend newsletter: One of the biggest benefits of DCS World 2.5 is that it's a much better environment to fly helicopters. The higher-resolution terrain elevation mesh, higher resolution terrain and object textures, much improved trees, huge forests, and trees that now have collision / block line of sight for weapons, all create a much more engaging and beautiful environment to fly in. Starting today and lasting until 19 February at 0900 GMT, we are offering 30% off on all helicopters for DCS World! Find these great deals on our E-Shop. Personally, I'm really interested in that Gazelle! It has multi-crew so two pilots can share an aircraft and scout and strike targets, or call in artillery from behind enemy lines

  10. TONIGHT! [DC]The Crossing

TONIGHT: [DC]The Crossing 28th July 1944 Vistula river Poland, near town of Baranow. Situation: Meine Herren the Bolshevik offensive is rolling towards us. Armee Gruppe Mitte is withdrawing. Our forces are have been ordered to withdraw across the Vistula by OKH. MIsssion: Kampfgruppe is ordered to hold the approaches to the bridge for as long as possible in order to allow as much of 4th Panzer Army to cross over. This will enable a stronger defence of the West Bank and allow us to consolidate the front and hold the Russians with the Vistula as a barrier. OKH expects us to hold until 0630, when the last convoy of troops should be over the river. We must not allow the Bolsheviks to gain a bridgehead across the river or the entire front could collapse. Enemy Patrols and prisoner snatches indicate we are facing elements of the 1st guards tank army and the 350th rifle division. Intelligence suggest that the enemy may have outrun their supply train and are using their reserves to be continue their assault. The guards tank army is equipped with the latest Soviet equipment. Some sightings of heavy tanks have been reported by withdrawing units. The 350th rifle is a mainly infantry unit equipped with some lend lease vehicles. The most likely course of action is for the enemy to probe our positions to try and ascertain our strength as the search a a place to secure a bridgehead across the Vistula The most dangerous course of action would be an combined arms assault by the guards tank army prior to our withdrawal to the strong positions over the river Sign up here!

One more note I neglected - they've confirmed a Afghanistan map is in the works, and coming soon a new FLIR tech will be worked in (ARMA has better FLIR!)
  15. DCS World Open Beta Available NOW "The Open Beta version of Digital Combat Simulator World (DCS World) 2.5 is a free-to-play digital battlefield game. The “release” version will be available shortly after Open Beta testing is complete. The Open Beta is an optional version of DCS World that we use to first test new content and technologies before moving them to our release version. Our dream is to offer the most authentic and realistic simulation of military aircraft, tanks and ships possible. This free download includes a vast mission area of the Caucasus region and Black Sea that encompasses much of Georgia. It also includes a flyable Russian Sukhoi Su-25T ground attack aircraft and the famous WWII North American TF-51D fighter. An additional 25 aircraft are available for purchase. The download comes with one of the most powerful mission editors ever designed, full network play and more than 156 AI weapons systems, 105 ground vehicles and trains, 50 air defense systems, 19 ships and 84 AI aircraft permitting you to plan and play highly sophisticated missions. DCS World is massively extensible through additional DCS modules as well as user-made add-ons and mods which you can purchase and download from our site. DCS is a true "sandbox" simulation that is also designed to cover multiple time periods of interest such as WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, Gulf War and others. Current regions to battle include the Caucasus, Nevada Test and Training Range, and Normandy 1944. New maps in development include the Persian Gulf, Syria, Afghanistan, and others. DCS World is fundamentally a deep, authentic and realistic simulation game designed also to offer a more relaxed gameplay to suit the user and his particular level of experience and training. The ambition is to hand hold users from novice pilot all the way to the most advanced and sophisticated operator of such complex weapons systems as the A-10C Warthog or the F/A-18C Hornet. The only next step is the real thing!" Take a look at the cinematic above, then let's process a couple of things here: Firstly, this is all inside DCS 2.5, although typically audio effects are added to make it more immersive. I'm not sure they have here though. The first shots are of helicopters, which is a good place to start. DCS World has an amazing engine to handle the dynamics of ungodly helicopter flight. Of course it does, the first module was the KA-50 Black Shark. Unfortunately, DCS has a history of letting down helicopters with trees that the AI can see through and shoot through, and a low poly mesh that looks dated and crap down low. The first scenes also detail the new SpeedTrees technology - this gives DCS a LARGE number of trees but also means they move in the wind. We'll have to wait and see how well it's implemented for low level hell. Look carefully through out the cinematic and you'll notice trees moving the wind is a common theme. This is significant for Combined Arms also, where low level detail is critical. Next up DCS WW2, there's new cloud tech, so they look a little better, but not amazing, so I'm not sure about whether that's finished yet. DCS WW2 is far and away the most authentic experience for WW2 modules. I'm having great fun in the P-51D and will jump into the rest over time. WW2 features new formations, so a sky full of wings of bombers is possible. This scene also highlights that static effects can now be added in the editor. So adding static fires and smoke can be added for immersion. Look carefully through out the cinematic and you'll notice smoke and fires added for good effect. The Maps will also automatically be in black out at night, as you'd expect. Up next we're off into the future, an unreleased map - the Strait of Hormuz, or is that Las Vegas? The Strait of Hormuz is better known simply as the Persian Gulf (the entrance to it). This is a good location because people go crazy for desert warfare. Featured here is probably Dubai, but it should also feature Iran in what is expected to be a fantastic F/A-18C map with carrier operations. Also shown is Las Vegas I think and the trains of Normandy, or is that Georgia? WW2 features in era trains now. It's worth mentioning that the new engine has enhanced shaders over 1.5. There's a lot of work to be done with this sort of change which switches from intense calculations of lighting and shadow casting to a system that defers it until a second pass of drawing the screen. The pay off with this is that scenery shadows and many many lights can be rendered, but there is a baseline cost in performance to be paid. It's worth the cost IMHO. Looking at naval operations, there has been a lot of work done here hopefully. AI helicopters can now land on any ship with a helipad and the water looks a lot better, particularly in nasty weather. With the F/A-18C, there'll also be a need for the Su-34 to work well too. After this there's a bunch of shots of typical scenes with the array of modules available. One of the scenes that is worth noting is the MI-8 flying in the new Caucus Map. Rivers now look great, long gone are the days of rivers having a deceptive look of being 100ft below the land they are flowing over. This was because they basically clipped to show the ocean at sea level, so a high altitude river was a very odd thing. Halfway through and we get the first view of Eagle Dynamics new money printer, including a nice snippet of shooting the Cat. Carrier operations will be so, so important for this module. I hope we get some nice carrier deck operations, but it's not shown. There's also several scenes with the AH-64, probably to show off new explosions, but it'd be interesting if they have reserved the AH-64 for development. The cinematic ends with a bunch of shots culminating in the Hornet shooting an approach, which is hands down the best part of a U.S Navy module. What do you think? DISCUSS IT HERE!
  16. Part of the upcoming Tanks DLC is a free expansion to the existing armoured vehicles, to add 3D interior crew spaces. Previously, the views were simply 2D, similar to looking through binoculars. NOTE: the 2D view is still available via the right click optics button. Here's a quote from the Lead Artist, Luboš Groch: The absence of interiors in current armored vehicles was perceived to be the 'missing piece' of the puzzle we will now bring as part of an upcoming free platform update related to the Tanks DLC. That means a little under 20 unique vehicles and their variants will have fully-modeled interiors. As far as the interiors are concerned, it will not just be a boring flat texture, but immersive richly detailed spaces, which will bring a whole new layer of gameplay. Beside that, we are also working on some completely new assets for this DLC, which should be very specific for enriching a wide range of sandbox toys and complete our tanks-themed package. Details of the premium DLC content to be included in Tanks should be announced early this year. As an owner of the Supporter Edition, I hope we get some high quality vintage (ie. 2018) tanks!
  17. BREAKING NEWS: The Russian Federation today announced the death of a Special Liaison Training Officer as the result of a boating accident in the vicinity of Malden. This brings the Russian military loses on the island to 3, after a helicopter was shot down inside the NATO enforced no fly zone. The Russian Federation had no further comment on the matter.
  18. DCS F/A-18C Hornet Producer's Note

PLEASE NOTE: Our tac mission is at the normal time of 7:30PM AEDT (7:15PM slot up)! Apologies, I didn't realise the calendar was using my local time when creating it. DCS F/A-18C Hornet Producer's Note This is the 4th academic video for the DCS F/A-18C Hornet. In this episode, we will take a look at the Head Up Display (HUD), Upfront Controller (UFC), and Integrated Fuel / Engine Indicator (IFEI). Aside from the all the fancy equipment in this video, take a look at the optimisation of the new EDGE engine which uses carefully balanced differed lighting for a really natural look.

Situation: 0540hrs Local EN: Malden Militia are an irregular force scattered throughout the island. They are composed of poorly trained infantry using scavenged materials, including the quite common AKM. More recently intel indicates the Russians, who oppose Malden's, democratically elected and Western backed, Govt have begun covertly supporting the Malden Militia. This support may now ramp up as a result of a recent helicopter shoot down. With tensions rising intel suggests lethal aid, training and advisors may be provided to the militia, escalating the issue into a full blown proxy war. Armed with small arms, the militia have been targeting local political leaders, law enforcement and informants, however the militia may be gaining the ability to engage with NATO security forces directly. FR: Our platoon is comprised of an HQ element, 2 light infantry maneuver sections and a light machine gun weapons section. Mobility is provided by Humvees and Trucks. Our platoon is based in the Southern area of Malden, providing security for a humanitarian mission. We are tasked with maintaining security and delivering aid to the IDAP for distribution. Although this mission has been routine so far, last week a Russian attack helicopter penetrated the no fly zone and was shot down by NATO forces. A hasty action that, while justified, political leaders regret. This has caused outrage and tension on the island with finger pointing in both directions. All forces are on alert for any direct or indirect retaliation by the Russians or the forces they may choose to support by proxy as a result. CIV: A humanitarian crisis us underway with IDAP providing aid stations around the island. IDAP has hired security forces to maintain order but NATO has taken over the delivery of aid through urban areas. Our platoon is due to deliver supplies to the local IDAP centre this morning, but comms appears to be down. Local police patrol the roads and civilian activity is fairly light due to the unrest. Mission: Resupply the IDAP Base, restore communications with the IDAP, maintain area security until return to base. Execution: Deliver aid to the IDAP base. Investigate the loss of, and restore communications to the IDAP base RTB Command: Admin: No respawn Mods: NOTES: Please RSVP! As it's summer break the mission will scale depending on turn-out This mission is a linear series of unfolding events far beyond the scope of the SMEAC

  22. DCS World 2.5 Release Details

Today ED released a news update confirming the release plan for DCS World 2.5: "DCS World 2.5.0 Update Yes, we are still on track to release by the end of this month! Last week we created a test version of the DCS World 2.5.0 branch and we and our testers are hammering away on it. DCS World 2.5.0 will be released as an update to the Open Beta on 31 January 2018, and the 2.5.0 Open Beta installer will be available the next day. We are staggering these to avoid overloading our file servers. The 2.5.0 "Release" version will launch a week or two later, depending on how the Open Beta release goes. The Steam version will come a week after the 2.5.0 Release version is launched. In parallel, we are also preparing the final update for DCS World 1.5.8. This will continue 1.5.8’s availability, but it will be unsupported following the release of DCS World 2.5. You can find a detailed description of the DCS World 2.5.0 launch process on the DCS forum." From the DCS Forums, there is a diagram of the release schedule here:
