Page,

Take a look here: http://www.dx.com/s/3g+repeater

As long as you put up a nice high antenna, some of this kit would probably do the job. I consider DX a pretty trustworthy site - some of their stuff is absolute rubbish, but they don't charge freight and you can return anything that doesn't work for the cost of local (AU) postage and a full refund.

Be careful though. It's unlikely anything you buy online is type approved for Australia. In other words, it will be technically illegal to operate it. If the signal doesn't spill beyond the edges of your property it's unlikely that anyone will notice. If there's a main road running close to the property, it might be a bad idea to go down this path...

Repeaters require the antenna to be in range (basically line of sight) of a tower. The higher the better to a point - the antennae on the towers are tilted 5-15 degrees downwards, so don't go too high. If the antenna can't get a signal (or can't transmit far enough to reach the tower) they won't work. In such cases you need a femtocell which would plug into a landline or internet connection, and only work for one telco.

For best effect use a directional antenna pointed at the tower (yagi or dish antenna), and an omni-directional to provide even coverage for the area you want to cover.

Good luck!
